Unsung Hero Awards of South Australian Science and Science Communication – Nominations Extended
The SA National Science Week Coordinating Committee is delighted to again present the Unsung Hero Awards of South Australian Science and Science Communication.
The Unsung Hero Awards are intended to recognise those whose contribution has been significant over a long period of time but who have not yet received formal public recognition. The awards may assist the recipients promote their work, publicise important issues and focus attention on their field of work and give their work public credibility.
There are 2 awards offered:
- Unsung Hero of South Australian Science – for science and research endeavours
- Unsung Hero of South Australian Science Communication – for the communication of science

Key Dates:
- Nominations close: 5pm Monday 1 July 2024
- Finalists announced: 26 July 2024.

Payirri-apinthirlu naalityangka
First Nations Science Festival
The SA NSWk Coordinating Committee launched a new event in 2022, a First Nations Science Festival, to showcase First Nations knowledge(s).
In 2023 the festival was gifted a Kaurna name Payirri-apinthirlu naalityangka, which means investigate with you all.
Payirri-apinthirlu naalityangka aims to not only showcase First Nations knowledge(s) but also encourage and support participation by First Nations people and organisations in National Science Week along with inspire an interest in STEM study, careers and hobbies.
Proposal for activities for the 2024 Festival are welcome. Activities such as hands on workshops, talks or demonstrations that share traditional and modern Indigenous knowledge(s) or which showcase both historic and current Indigenous scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs. Funds are available to support the delivery of events and activities.

SA National Science Week grants now open!
Grants are now open for National Science Week grants for projects and activities delivered in South Australia.
- up to $2500 for events and activities in metropolitan Adelaide
- up to $3000 for events and activities in regional and remote areas
National Science Week, 10-18 August, is Australia’s annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine.
Key Dates:
- Applications close: 5pm 15 May.
- Grants recipients announced: early June.
- Grant events live on National Science Week website: 30 June.
- National Science Week: 10-18 August.

2024 Schools Theme
The 2024 schools theme is Species Survival – More than just sustainability.
The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
National Science Week
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running in August each year, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.
These events attract a wide audience from children to adults and science amateurs to professionals. Over one million people participate in science events across the nation.
